The Best Chocolate-Covered Pretzels, Ranked

I love chocolate-covered pretzels. They give me just enough chocolate to satisfy my fix, but because they aren’t pure chocolate, they’re far more dynamic than a plain piece of milk chocolate. The real secret, though, is the pretzel itself: the crispier the pretzel, the better the experience. The right pretzel transforms the whole thing. 

I’ve tried a lot of chocolate-covered pretzels but, to me, only one truly earns the title of “the best”. Let’s dive in—I’ll share my pick for the best chocolate-covered pretzels overall and explain why it earned the top spot.

🏆 Chocolate-Covered Pretzels: The Verdict

• Best Overall: Utz Chocolate Covered Pretzels Specials. Crisp, flaky, and pretzel-forward with chocolate that complements rather than overwhelms.
• Runner-Up: Snyder’s Milk Chocolate Pretzel Dips Chocolate-Covered Pretzels. Excellent crunch and balance—especially when Utz isn’t in season.
• Best Value: Trader Joe’s Milk Chocolate Covered Mini Pretzels. Good chocolate, softer pretzels, and an unbeatable price per ounce.
• Chocolate-First Options: Flipz Chocolate Covered Pretzels & Hershey’s Dipped Pretzels. Enjoyable, but less dynamic due to weaker pretzel presence.

Bottom line

If texture and pretzel flavor matter most to you, Utz is the clear winner. If value matters more—or you just want something year-round—Trader Joe’s and Snyder’s both earn a spot in the pantry.

🥇 The Best: Utz Chocolate-Covered Pretzels

I find myself gravitating toward the chocolate-covered pretzels from Utz and Snyder’s—particularly their milk chocolate–covered pretzels) for two key reasons:

1. The pretzels are delightfully crispy;
2. The chocolate actually tastes good. 

That crispiness is what truly sets them apart. When the pretzel is properly crunchy, the combination of pretzel and chocolate becomes almost biscuit- or cookie-like. Suddenly, I’m not just eating just any chocolate-covered pretzel: I’m eating a treat with real texture and structure. This combination ratchets everything up several notches. 

If I had to choose one as the best, though, Utz wins. 

Utz’s pretzels are a little skinnier than Snyder’s, which creates a greater sense of lightness and snap. They’re also flakier, further emphasizing that biscuit-like quality. The pretzel flavor is also fantastic. That balance of flavor and texture is what puts Utz over the top for me.

Don’t get me wrong, though: Snyder’s milk chocolate–covered pretzels are excellent. We’ll circle back to them shortly. 

There is one catch: both Utz and Snyder’s only sell their chocolate-covered pretzels at the end of the year. Because of that, I typically stock up on Utz to make it through the rest of the calendar—six tubs means I can go enjoy one every two months. To be clear, I never clear the shelves; I just buy one or two tubs per week while they’re available.

What sets Utz and Snyder’s Apart

Utz and Snyder’s each does something most other chocolate-pretzel brands don’t: they actually taste like pretzels with chocolate. Many competitors taste more like chocolate with something vaguely crunchy and pretzel-ish inside. 

These two brands also have larger salt crystals that bring a more pronounced saltiness. This aspect further heightens the flavor of these chocolate-covered pretzels. 

Utz edges out Snyder’s because the overall package is more delectable: the cookie-like character of Utz makes them feel like more of treat.

It’s also worth noting that the chocolate in both products tastes genuinely good. That matters: chocolate is one of the main ingredients, after all. (To be clear, it’s not going to knock your socks off, but it’s flavorful and pleasant.)

🥈 Runner-Up: Snyder’s Chocolate-Covered Pretzels

By now you know that Snyder’s is my number two—and you know why. Their pretzels are crispy, the chocolate is solid, and the balance is excellent. Also, of all the pretzels on this list, Snyder’s has the best pretzel flavor.

💰 Most Bang for the Buck: Trader Joe’s

Trader Joe’s deserves a mention because their chocolate-covered pretzels are very good, even if they don’t quite reach Utz or Snyder’s levels.

They’re also far more economical:

• Trader Joe’s: $4.29 for 12oz → $0.36 per ounce
• Snyder’s: $4.49 for 6oz → $0.75 per ounce

I usually keep my pantry stocked with a mix of Trader Joe’s and either Utz or Snyder’s. TJ’s pretzels are my everyday option when I want to satisfy a chocolate craving, while Utz or Snyder’s are what I reach for when I’m in the mood for something more dynamic. 

What holds Trader Joe’s back is the pretzel itself and the chocolate. The pretzel flavor is muted, and the texture isn’t especially crispy.

As for the chocolate, it tastes good, but not nearly as good as Snyder’s and Utz.

But at roughly half the cost per ounce, they’re an undeniable value. 

Also Great (But Not as Good): Flipz & Hershey’s

Both Flipz and Hershey’s chocolate-covered pretzels are enjoyable, but they prioritize chocolate over pretzel. Compared to Utz and Snyder’s, they’re simply less pretzel-forward.

Between the two, Hershey’s leans hardest into the chocolate, while Flipz offers a more balanced ration with a noticeable pretzel component. If you like Hershey’s but want a bit more crunch and salt, then grab a bag of Flipz.  

I wouldn’t turn either down, but the lack of pretzel emphasis makes them less interesting to me. They’re simply not as dynamic. 

One odd note: I find Hershey’s chocolate causes a mild burning sensation in my throat. I have no idea why—maybe it’s the butyric acid that Hershey’s chocolate is known for. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it, either.

Every time I hand someone a Take 5, they say something like “How have I never tried this before?” More people need to get on board.

What about Reese’s Dipped Pretzels?
